The project begins!

Thanks to the National Centre of Student Equity in Higher Education, we have been funded to undertake a national scoping study looking at the potential of open textbooks to act as social justice in Australia. Social justice seeks to remedy injustice across three dimensions: economic, identity and representation. So we are not only interested in saving students money with free textbooks, we are interested to ensure our diverse students can recognise themselves inside their textbooks.

We know that Australian academics are keen to customise their texts for the Australian context. Let’s see if as part of that customisation process, we can add in more indigenous, multi-cultural and gender-balanced content to make more inclusive, welcoming Australian textbooks for all students. And lastly, let’s involve students from under-represented groups in the process of making the textbook more inclusive so they represent their own truths, and not those we speak for them.
